How can you provide continuing education for your care team at a senior living facility despite the pandemic? Together with Meggi, our instructor, 16 care staff members gained a deeper understanding of various medical conditions and their effects on motor function and mobility in geriatrics, orthopedics, and neurology. The team at the Erna-David Senior Center in Dortmund worked together during this in-house training session to analyze the residents’ gait patterns and improve their own ability to assess movement. The eight training sessions consisted of an equal balance of essential theory and plenty of hands-on practice. The challenge of assisting seniors as they walk without disrupting their balance was practiced just as intensively as mobility training on the G-WEG in combination with dual-task exercises. The training day demonstrated that joint gait and fall prevention training as a team is important for everyone and that, in the future, all team members will be able to train with the residents equally. True to the motto: “Step by step toward more confident walking and fewer falls!”
